Segment
Also called: Business unit · Division
A part of a company that reports its own revenue and profit, such as a product line or region.
Large companies are often several businesses under one roof. Accounting rules require them to report the main parts separately as segments, typically with revenue and operating profit each.
Segment figures often reveal the surprise in a breakdown: one division bringing in most of the profit, or a famous brand turning out to be a small part of the whole.
General explanation for education only, not investment advice. Company-specific definitions can differ; each breakdown uses the company’s own.
